I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the water main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We will be there as soon as possible to save the day.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
