I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the problem from growing, give our emergency plumber a call, at any time of the day or night. They’ll be there rapidly to solve the problem.

While waiting, clear away any important things close to the leak, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
