I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s done, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to fix the leak.

In the meantime, begin cleaning up any water, place a bucket to catch drips, and remove valuable things from the affected area. If the property water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
