I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our team a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you promptly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things close to the leak, and wipe up any water or place a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
