I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a valve, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains valve to stop all water to your property.

Once that is sorted, give our plumber a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there promptly to fix the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber to arrive, remove any significant things, clean up any water, and position a container to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
