I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have taps that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water tap to cut off all the water to your property.

In the meantime, start cleaning up any water, put a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away significant possessions from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
